Summary

We are looking for teachers to work on our inaugural Summer Programmes in 2024: The Young Adults Summer Programme, for international students aged 15-17; and The London Experience, for students aged 30+. The programmes both comprise three consecutive two-week courses, with lessons being taught in the iconic Senate House building in central London. There are no pastoral duties, and classes are taught on weekdays from 9:00am to 1:00pm (Young Adults), and 9:00am to 12:30pm (London Experience). Given that the Young Adults programme is proportionately larger, we anticipate more teaching courses to be allocated to Young Adults than London Experience. We expect candidates to be ready and willing to teach on either programme as dictated by operational demand.

    Background

    Established in 1912, we are amongst the world's oldest English language schools. We are proud of our full house of strengths with the British Council which reflects our focus on quality and client satisfaction. In 2024, the London School of English will inaugurate its first two residential summer programmes for international students aged 15-17. The programmes are based in Bloomsbury, in central London, and are made up of three consecutive 2-week course durations:

    30th June - 13th July 2024
    14th July – 27th July 2024
    28th July – 10th August 2024

    Young Adults

    The Young Adults programme aims to guide and support older adolescents into adulthood through a mixture of classroom learning and vocational experiences. The course participants study for approximately 25 hours each week, on one of three academic courses:



    Business Pioneers: Drivers of Success, which is for those who are interested in pursuing a career in business and covers the practical basics of entrepreneurship.

    Global Leaders: Change Makers of Tomorrow, which is aimed at ideologically minded students who are keen to engage with global issues of critical importance.

    Digital Media Innovators: The Next Disruptors, which is for those interested in digital media creation, as well as the ethics and controversies emerging around online media consumption.

    The academic programme is eclectic, involving a combination of classroom teaching, guest speakers, vocational workshops and off-site, in-company ‘experience’ provision. Its aims are to…

    • ...inspire and motivate students by giving them authentic exposure to careers-based talks & workshops.
    • …provide a ‘university experience’ through living and studying at University of London venues.
    • …practice and develop their English through immersive and engaging subject-based academic content

    The London Experience

    The aims of the London Experience programme are to provide an integrated learning experience whereby adult learners’ morning lessons are thematically linked to their afternoon cultural excursions. For instance, if they are scheduled to visit the Tower of London in the afternoon, in the mornings they will learn about the Tower and its history, before segueing into broader themes of crime and punishment. Teachers usually only teach the morning classes, but may sometimes be required to accompany their students to the venues in the afternoons.

      Details

      For both programmes, the learning objectives are subject- and skills-based rather than linguistic, with content- and task-based instruction being the dominant methodologies. Grammar and phonology are not explicitly taught, and language teaching is mostly limited to blocking lexis and error correction.

      The teaching component of the programmes is highly prescriptive, with detailed lesson plans and materials provided. Teachers are expected to follow the prescribed curriculum with little deviation, so they are not expected to plan their own lessons so much as familiarise themselves with the materials which we provide. It may be necessary to change teachers and courses according to operational demand. Classes are divided into ‘lower’ (CEFR B1.2-B2.1) and ‘upper’ (CEFR B2.2-C2) proficiency levels.

      Each day, teachers attend a short briefing with the Academic Manager and/or Programme Director at 8:45am and begin teaching at 9:00am. With the Young Adults programme there are three and a half hours of teaching, with two 15-minute breaks. With London Experience, there are three hours of teaching with one 30-minute break. Teachers are offered a complementary lunch at Senate House. Young Adults teachers also attend the graduation ceremony at the end of each two-week course, which takes place from 1:00pm to 4:00pm on a Friday. There are no duties after 1:00pm on other weekdays, or at any time on any weekends.

      There is a mandatory induction on Saturday 29 June, from 9:00am to 1:00pm in person at Senate House.

        Candidate Profile

        Eligible candidates must be qualified teachers of English as a Second Language (i.e. minimum CELTA, CertTESOL or equivalent). It is desirable but not essential for candidates to have a personal interest and/or professional experience related to at least one specific course area. Candidates must also have legal right to work in the UK (usually meaning permanent British residency), and a C2 level of English language proficiency. As we do not offer accommodation, candidates must be able to commute easily into central London each day.

          Salary and Benefits

          We are offering a fixed term six-week contract, with the inclusive dates of Saturday 29 June to Friday 9 August 2024. The total pay, including the completion bonus, is £4,080 – this includes holiday pay. Candidates must be available to work for the entire six-week period. Lunch is included at no extra cost. Accommodation is not available or included in the contract. Successful candidates may also be eligible for year-round freelance teaching work at our school in Holland Park Gardens.
